Tuition Information

The gift of a Jewish day school education is an investment in your child’s future. And CDS is deeply committed to affordability.

Tuition dollars enable Community Day School to provide outstanding academics in a dynamic and engaging learning environment, while making a profound impact on our students’ Jewish knowledge and identity. Tuition allows us to sustain our individualized approach to education, invest in stellar teachers and innovative curricula, and commit to the technology and resources that prepare our students to meet the complex challenges of the 21st century. We recognize and appreciate that choosing to send a child to Jewish day school reflects a significant commitment for every family. This investment in your child’s formative early years is a gift that lays the foundation for a successful future in high school and beyond. Our families know they can measure the value of a CDS education in each graduate’s skills, confidence, strong character, and Jewish connection.

Affording CDS

Community Day School is committed to helping every Jewish family in Pittsburgh realize the dream of a CDS education for their children, regardless of financial status. Our school values an inclusive, socioeconomically diverse community. We strive to provide tuition assistance to all who are eligible, aiming to make CDS affordable for as many families as possible. We currently award tuition assistance to approximately 60 percent of our students. Our robust tuition assistance program is made possible through the generous financial support of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh and community donors, as well as state Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) funds received from the Pittsburgh Jewish Educational Improvement Foundation, managed by Federation.

Awards of tuition assistance are offered on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and we encourage all families concerned about affordability to apply. The tuition assistance process is always kept strictly confidential and separate from admission decisions.

Please use the standardized FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment Application to apply for tuition assistance (a $30 processing fee applies).

Award decisions for the 2018-2019 academic year will be communicated in February. Late applicants will be considered based on the availability of funds.

First-Year Free Program

If your child currently attends school in Allegheny County (excluding other Jewish day schools), you can make the switch to Community Day School in Grades 3 to 7 with no tuition for the first year through our First-Year Free Program. It’s not a gimmick, but rather our promise to you of the exceptional value you will discover in a CDS education.

Middle School Tuition Lock

The Middle School at Community Day School aims to support the developmental needs of early adolescents, as we challenge and stretch both their minds and spirits. Our exceptional academic program and extracurricular offerings develop critical thinking skills, promote a love of learning, and nurture self-confidence as these young adults experience this unique time of greater independence and responsibility.

To make a CDS Middle School education affordable to more families, beginning in the 2015-2016 academic year, we implemented a lock on the published tuition price for students in Grades 6-8. The Middle School Tuition Lock means the published tuition price your family pays for a child entering 6th Grade is the same rate you will pay for the duration of their Middle School years.

This program is our way of investing in students and showing you, tangibly, that we are committed to making our school affordable throughout your child’s experience at CDS.

Planning Ahead

Each year, after an extensive planning process, the CDS Board of Trustees sets tuition for the following year, and we are committed to the principles of predictability and transparency. In 2015, the board voted to limit future tuition increases to not more than 3%. Tuition remained flat in the 2015-2016 school year. Future annual increases are not inevitable, but will be decided on an annual basis. The cap on potential future increases provides you with a general guideline to use to anticipate tuition at Community Day School in the years ahead.

And you don’t have to worry about your tuition assistance fluctuating greatly in future years after your initial award. The CDS Board of Trustees also guaranteed in 2015 that annual awards will not be reduced in future years unless your family’s financial situation improves or the family’s number of students enrolled decreases

Please contact Kevin Bouchard, chair of the Tuition Assistance Committee, at 412-521-1100, Ext. 2189 or with any questions about tuition assistance at CDS.
